What, some have asked, will I be reading on sabbatical? Reading feeds my soul, and I’ll be taking is as much as I can while still feeling refreshed!
My list includes a few classics I’ve felt drawn to and well as some new stuff, and center more on the soul of a pastor than on his skillset. Here are the ones highest on the list . . .
Scripture:
I plan to hang out primarily in 1 and 2 Timothy and Titus and the Gospels. Helping me out will be three of my favorite commentators: John Stott and Gordon Fee for the pastorals, and Kenneth Bailey for the Gospels.
Soul care:
The Good and Beautiful God by James Bryan Smith.
A Hidden Wholeness by Parker Palmer.
Brennan Manning’s memoir.
Emotionally Healthy Spirituality by Pete Scazerro.
Pastoral theology and leadership:
Leading with a Limp by Dan Allender.
Working the Angles by Eugene Peterson.
In the Name of Jesus by Henri Nouwen.
Renovation of the Church by Carlson.
And chances are we’ll work in a little C. S. Lewis as well . . .
